The buffalo won a lot of respect - they're faster than horses, they run longer than horses, and they never backed down. They really fed our film, and in some way held it up spiritually.

The very first day the buffalo ran, there were three thousand of them coming at us, and nobody was sure what was going to happen. The Native American riders were wild and they were great rodeo riders, but no one had ridden among the buffalo for more than a hundred years.

So no one knew what to expect, really, and suddenly here they came over the hill, and people's stomachs were in their throats…
